Top 10 XBLA Games Worldwide

Next Generation got an stat laden email from Microsoft detailing all of the crazy number the Xbox 360 has produced (like 600 million unlocked achievements). Amongst all the chest thumping is the list for the top 10 XBLA downloads worldwide.

Thus, we can now resume our top 10 banter without the aid of Major Nelson. Take that Major!

Naw, I'm just teasing. We really do want Major to start putting them up again. Especially since his Tokyo trip is no excuse anymore.

But back to the list. The #1 game? Nope, not UNO. Try Aegis Wing.

Fill your mind with my bitter cynicism (and the rest of the list) after the break.

The top 10 Xbox LIVE Arcade downloads worldwide:

  1. Aegis Wing
  2. Uno
  3. Texas Hold 'em
  4. Geometry Wars Retro Evolved
  5. Bankshot Billiards 2
  6. Street Fighter 'II Hyper Fighting
  7. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 1989 Classic Arcade
  8. Worms
  9. Castlevania: Symphony of the Night
  10. Contra

So, let's break it down a bit here. First, note they say "downloads" not "purchases" which would be a much more interesting chart. I mean Aegis Wing? Really? Not to knock the game but I just don't think it has the same clout as Geo Wars. Here's how the list has been translated by my cynical side.

  1. Aegis Wing D'uh it's free!
  2. Uno Only 400MSP and the chance to see boobies for the first time is a large motivation.
  3. Texas Hold 'em D'uh it was free!
  4. Geometry Wars Retro Evolved 400MSP for one of the best games on the service. Now, it's even a pack-in on the memory unit.
  5. Bankshot Billiards 2 Pack-in!! Who bought this at 1200MSP?
  6. Street Fighter 'II Hyper Fighting Never underestimate a Street Fighter fan's tolerance for purchasing the same game over and over and over.
  7. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 1989 Classic Arcade Never underestimate nostalgia and the promise of unlimited quarters. Also just 400MSP.
  8. Worms Never underestimate a nerd's willingness to calculate trajectory against wind speed velocity. In his head.
  9. Castlevania: Symphony of the Night The reason for the new XBLA size limit. Classic.
  10. Contra Konami Code. Spreadshot. 'Nuff Said. Well, also it's only 400MSP.

I'm not bitter, I swear.

XBLA must be near

XBLA must be near non-existent internationally if Aegis Wing is the top downloaded game worldwide (considering it was only available in the U.S., if my memory serves me correctly).

Kind of disappointing they

Kind of disappointing they only list the top downloads, not top purchases. That would make a complete difference. Notice how the top three games were free of charge at some point. Definitely surprised to see that many people downloaded Billiards. Good to see TMNT still getting love.

It wouldn't matter. As far

It wouldn't matter. As far as the charts go the redemption of a code is equal to a purchase. Sure Aegis Wing never had a code, but any game which came bundled would have the similar advantage.

Almost forgot...or anythign you got for registering your xbox within the holiday season (like me, forgot what I recieved codes for though) or from the Old Spice Challenge...etc etc ... ---... etc ...
