Two exclusive Geometry Wars sequels will be gracing the Nintendo Wii and DS respectively. Both are titled Geometry Wars: Galaxies. Let that sink in for a second. New Geo Wars, not on Live Arcade.
Even though it is certainly a disappointment, to some degree we should have seen this coming. Bizarre Creations may have strong ties to Microsoft but they are still a third-party developer. And right now the Wii and DS are riding massive buzz (and sales). And since the Wii and DS both foster a strong casual community, this game is a great fit. But still. My heart is heavy.
Puzzling in the announcement is the inclusive of "an extensive single-player campaign". Campaign? Not sure how that would work. The first two Geo Wars will be included with each game and multiplayer will be present in both versions as well. Also, each game will take advantage of each system's unique control mechanisms (touch and motion).
My only hope lies in the idea that these are companion games to Geometry Wars: Retro Evolved and that XBLA will get a full featured Geo Wars 3 with co-op, vs., and more bizarre and frustrating enemies than ever before. Don't crush my optimism Bizarre!

I wouln't worry too much, as these Geo Wars titles are Geo wars in name and art only, and not actually developed by Bizarre. If you think that doesn't make a difference, go play super monkey ball adventure.

Yeah I'm not going to worry till we see what comes from Bizarre in conjunction with PGR4. If we see nothing and hear nothing, then I'll be start to worry.

Okay. That perspective should help stave off the gloom and doom. I forgot that PGR4 was coming this holiday!

I mean Geometry Wars on the go (for the DS, at least)? Tell me one wrong thing with something like that. Original style, evolved styled AND 'galaxies' of different worlds to shoot up (which presumably have different kinds of enemies)? AND multiplayer? This is very good. More Geo Wars for everyone. Now more than Xbox/360 and cell phone gamers can enjoy this game.
I guess the only thing to hate about this is that it's not (at the moment) coming to the Arcade. But maybe this game is so big that it wouldn't fit based on current Arcade regulations. Well, I guess they could add a series of downloads...but who knows how much it'd be priced at.
Anyway, Joystiq has two good interviews up for reading telling more details.

Don't get me wrong, the games may turn out to be quite good, but with a different developer they will play differently, and probably wont "feel" like GW as much as they will "look" like GW.
If the developer is good, expect good results. I've never heard of the developer they've passed this off to, though, so I don't know what other games to look to as a guide.
EDIT: After further research, the developer, Kuju, doesn't seem to have done a whole lot, but we will get to see some of their work on the XBLA soon as they are responsible for the upcoming "Sensible Soccer" conversion.
