Small Arms forum up on XBox.com

In a move that hopefully is a sign of what will come out next week, Microsoft has opened up a new forum for the upcoming indie game, Small Arms. While this is certainly no guarantee that the game will be next (or even that it will be released anytime soon), it is certainly something that will get peoples hopes up (Mine included).

You can check out the forum here.

Stainless games to work on Atari Classics

Stainless games, the developers behind Crystal Quest and the upcoming Novadrome, have been announced as the developers that will be bringing the recently announced Atari titles to XBLA starting early next year.

CEO Patrick Buckland had this to say:

"We are a company of hard-core old-school gamers, so the opportunity to work on these titles is an honour for us. This fits in perfectly with Stainless' strategy of becoming the first port of call for publishers wanting Live Arcade development."

Missile Comand to do "Evolved" correctly, not so much for Centipede/Millipede

After many many retro titles, merely throwing updated textures on old games, Atari has finally decided to add wide screen support for one of their games. As the images now up on xboxyde, Missile Command actually looks next-gen. Now if Centipede/Millipede could do the same, I'd be happy.

Check out the Missile Command screen shots here.

And the Centipede/Millipede screen shots here.

Contra blasts onto XBLA

Weighing in at 400 points and just over 32MB, The classic side scrolling shooter contra is now available on XBLA. From xbox.com:

Quote:

In Contra, the world has been invaded and only two soldiers stand between the alien menace known as Red Falcon and the total annihilation of humanity. Using high-tech weaponry such as the Mini Laser, the Fireball, and the dreaded Spread Gun, it's time to teach some alien scum not to mess with Earth. Enhanced for Xbox Live Arcade, the new version of Contra includes online multiplayer to play with your friends, leaderboards to go for your best score, achievements, updated graphics, and new sound effects .

  • New visuals: Enjoy enhanced artwork including rendered new bullet effects and explosions.

Gamertag Radio releases Xbox Community Awards nominee list.

Head on over to Gamertag Radio's site and vote for all your favorites in this year's Xbox Community Awards. While your there, you may notice a strange entry under the "Xbox News Site Of The Year" category. That's right, XBLArcade.com has been nominated! It truly is an honor to be nominated in the same category as these great sites (each of which I check each and every day):

Xbox News Site Of The Year

BTW when this site ends up with only one vote, you'll know who that was :)

MS reveals partial 2006 release list

Buried at the bottom of the Atari press release (and then expanded upon on Major Nelson's 200th blogcast), was a partial release list of what we will be seeing before the end of the year. The list is not the complete list of what's going to be released. The games (in no particular order) is:

Quote:

  • Small Arms (Gastronaut Studios) โ€“ an indie-developed original title designed specifically for Xbox Live Arcade, featuring frantic multiplayer brawling combined with action and precision shooting.
  • Novadrome (Buena Vista Games) โ€“ originally developed futuristic racing on Xbox Live Arcade.
  • Assault Heroes (Wanako/Vivendi Games) โ€“ blast waves of formidable foes in this originally developed top-down shooter, single player or two player co-op action.
  • Heavy Weapon (PopCap Games) โ€“ experience this irreverent, original side-scrolling action game that supports up to 4 players simultaneously.
  • Defender (Midway) โ€“ space combat classic updated for this generation.
  • Contra (Konami) โ€“ the seminal side-scrolling shooter that started it all will be launching on Xbox Live Arcade this Wednesday, November 8 at 0800 GMT

MS welcomes Atari to the XBLA fold

The press release for this one says it all, so I'll let it speak for itself:

Quote:

Speaking of classic arcade titles, Atari has announced that they'll be bringing six more of your favorites to Xbox Live Arcade, beginning in early 2007.

  • Centipede/Millipede: defend your village against an onslaught of centipedes, spiders, army ants and more. In addition to the classic mode, the evolution mode offers high definition graphics and special effects like motion blur, trails and particle-based explosions to make the experience as enjoyable today as it was decades ago.
  • Battlezone: the original tank vs. tank action classic has received an Xbox Live overhaul, adding in exciting new multiplayer modes including Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch and Capture the Flag. This updated version is truly a must-have for any fan of the original, which is also included. Additionally, players can use the Xbox Live Vision camera to watch live video of their opponents. Combine these features with new special effects for weapon firing, impacts and explosions and you have one killer classic as youโ€™ve never experienced it before.
  • Asteroids/Asteroids Deluxe: rotate, thrust, flip, fire and jump to hyperspace as you blast oncoming asteroids to smithereens just like in the 1979 original, but in updated, beautifully rendered, high definition graphics that complement the classic original.
  • Missile Command: protecting your city from alien missile attacks has never looked better now that this classic has been overhauled with updated graphics and 3D rendered vistas. Choose from the evolved mode or the timeless original gameplay.
  • Tempest: clear a web of enemies before time runs out and advance to the next stage, using an arsenal of weapons at your disposal. This evolved version features a graphics overhaul while maintaining the same addictive gameplay of the original.
  • Warlords: a multiplayer classic that resurrects the competitive spirit of arcade games from years gone by. Knock out the other kings in their castles while keeping yourself protected at the same time. Up to four players can join the action with the game taking control of any vacant castles allowing for a variety of single- or multiplayer experiences. Gamers can also import their own pictures to their castles for an extra personalization.
