Devs able to add up to 50 Achievement points to XBLA titles
Achievements, just the word gets people going. To some, it means playing hours on end to get every single last one of them, to others, it's a great idea gone wrong with the rampant "cheating" involved, to even more (me included), it's a score of just how bad you are at some games (damn you bejeweled!).Well it seems that Microsoft has decided that another way they can ensure better sales of DLC, is to add the point system to some of it's offerings.
Aaron Greenburg (or BIGVIP) has just posted on Gamerscoreblog, that from now on, not only will retail games be required to all for 1000 points with nothing but the disc purchase (some of it can be through DLC, but if it's towards the 1000 points, then it must be free), but developers can now add achievement points to DLC, either paid for or free. The additional points isn't limited to just retail games though, from now on developers looking to add some value to their downloadable content, can now add up to 50 additional points.
While personally I think this is a great idea, and wished it was around for the Outpost Kaloki X DLC, I wonder if this may be perceived by some as yet another cash grab by Microsoft. Regardless of how you feel about this, one thing can be certain, this will get people on all sides talking.
That's a good question, I
That's a good question, I wonder what the number of achievements will be. I'm betting it's 14
Maybe 3 more? If we're
Maybe 3 more? If we're adding 25% more points, it would make sense to have 25% more achievements.
The other thing I'm wondering is if games will suddenly start saying we have 200 of 250, or 1000 of 1250 even if we don't have the extra content.
Sounds like Major Nelson plans to discuss this on his podcast this weekend. Hopefully he and whatever guest(s) will clarify all this.
Personally, I think it's great, and I've been hoping they'd do something like this. Just too bad Lumines Live missed the boat. I deserve an achievement for completing all 100 puzzles dammit!
Game updates
Have we seen xbla game updates lately? I'm wondering if this has been in the works for a while and maybe we will see some updates + achs soon (Small Arms)?
New max # achs
I sent Hexx a PM... BIGVIP in majornelson's podcast this week said the new max # achs in xbla is 15 (from 12)
Thanks for the heads up.
Thanks for the heads up. I'm listening to it now, but I'm not that far yet.

Great idea!!
I agree I think this is a good idea. It gives more meaning to future updates and gives incentive for companies to reinvest in current titles. I'm wondering how xbla games will handle this. All xbla games have 12 achs. Will they make it 14 (or some static number) after this announcement? How dependent is the UI on 12 achs for xbla games?
My next big question is how many of the current xbla games will we see updated? My money is on Small Arms for sure. Probably Roboblitz. Updating older games like Marble Blast Ultra would rule.
