Pac-Man Impressions
I think it's unfair for people like Namco (and MS, for that matter) to have us pay $5 for games like Pac-Man, Dig Dug and Galaga at $5 with no upgrades for the game outside of HD support (which still looks no different from their original version) and Achievements.Regardless of if you consider it a full sequel, upgrade or whatever, it still looks, plays, sounds and acts like a regular Pac-Man game, but is still something completely new and fresh. It's a perfect blend of old and new (like Geometry Wars, for example), and it's exactly what the XBLA needs.
Yeah yeah, I totally agree.
But there are arcade ports and there are new games. They're two different things. That's all I'm saying. Somebody who wanted the original Pac-man game would be pissed if they got this instead.
Jetpac was awesome, though, they gave us both the original plus a brand new improved game for $5 total.
This is one awesome game. It really does have that Geometry Wars feel to it so hence making it totally addictive. I think it differs the most from the original in, well the obvious, like game speed and game objectives, but also that lives arent as valuable and easier to obtain, but the penalty is more the slow down it causes and the game is definitely alot more based on reflexes and not so much memorizing a pattern. The ghosts have definitely got alot smarter and react to everything you do and even sometimes pre-empt where you are going. I really think games like this and Jetpac Refuelled have really set a new bench mark in the way all the arcade games have to be made, to make them fun again. It doesnt take much, look at Jetpac, the gameplay is still the same, but throw in some better graphics, multipliers, weapons upgrades etc it is now a top quality game. Gotta say again This is one awesome game and I am finding it really hard to put down. It gives you that 'I know I can do better feeling' a sign of a quality game.
I keep on making the mistake of thinking I can have a quick 5 or 10 minute game of Pac-Man CE , but end up playing for an hour. Very addictive. Pacing is very much like Geo Wars. Very hard to put down. Multiplayer (co-op and versus) would have been the icing on the cake. Maybe for the next Pac-Man (hopefully not 25 years from now).
