Here's the first look at the cagey Shred Nebula. Sure, we might've been playing the game had it come out as some had predicted, but at least we get something this week, right? This video must count for something considering the game has been hiding for nearly a year. Just watch, decide, and then join me after the break.
The immediate question that I have after seeing this trailer is simple -- is Shred Nebula more than just another twin-stick Mutant Storm wannabe? I see a variety of weapons, but will the lack of single-box multiplayer (it has online and system link) hurt it's chances at success? Let's hope we hear and see more from this game before it finally launches in Q3 2008. Wait isn't that soon?

Don't worry you will hear a lot more... I wish I could say more, but here is a quote from a 1 up interview with James Goddard "About 20 ships will be included in the game, each with multi-tiered attacks and a heap of weapons to use. Goddard is vague about included game modes, but says Shred Nebula will have a "full single-player suite" with a couple of play modes, while the multiplayer side will include both online play and split-screen options." :) More information coming soon :)

From the Dev blog:
"This game represents a 100% original Xbox LIVE Arcade experience that delivers a totally different take on space flight you will feel in your bones as you crush the enemies before you :)"
Maybe I am missing something but it seems to be a prettier and faster 2D space arena game. That isn't exactly a totally different take on space flight and one would imagine they would put the distinctive elements into a trailer.
Course, if it does everything right which Battlestar and Wing Commander did wrong then it might be fun, but still nothing really new.
As MOTZ mentions, there is a lot to be revealed, but from the get-go we have pointed out it is not a twinstick shooter on every article- that should be left & owned by GW & SM (and robotron). You actually fly, I know that is crazy, but you do.. and you aim your ships direction to shoot at what you want, manage thrust, etc.
Nothing new there!!! LOL! But that style is a lost art apparently if you take a good look at the history of that style of flight control introduced with Space War & Asteroids. Over the decades, there have been poor attempts and a complete lack of understanding what made those original games fun. The ass-kicking this seemly simple genre handed out left a wake of bloodied developers choking on their teeth with the exception of 2 awesome games: Swarm and Sub-Space (all variations). Those 2 games properly used the existing control scheme and were awesome for their time.
What we have done is a complete re-envisioning of the original core (we love and respect) into modern controls and gameplay that is fresh and 100% legit.
So the video (by the way, check out the source found at www.shrednebula.com for HD 60FPS video that represents the true look/smooth speed of the game) shows you a barrage of things from the game that are all possible with this ‘different/fresh take’ on such an important and classic genre/space flight. But that was really just a small taste (the sheer amount of content packed into this is staggering at just 85megs).
I will confirm that of course there is extensive single box multiplayer coverage. We spent a lot of time making sure everything we demand as gamers from our $59 games are in this XBLA title.
It really sucks that we are not out, and I would appreciate it if the full story (why we did not come out) was noted you can grab from my blog at djamesgoddard.com. Trust me, we would be out right now if it was up to us, we do not want to wait until late Q3 2008 and would much rather be shredding online right now!
Editors, I would love to work with you and get you setup with all the details, play some multiplayer on partner net when you are ready. You can reach me at press@crunchtimegames.com
Thanks so much for posting this story.
