Reader Prym3 pointed out that [url=http://www.gamespot.com/xbox360/sim/wingcommanderarena/screenindex.html]Gamespot has six screenshots of Wing Commander Arena[/url] available on their site and rejoice for it looks to be an entirely new 3D Wing Commander game.

It looks like the gameplay
It looks like the gameplay is basically on a 2d plane, but from an isometric perspective. I'm not sure, though. There's a targeting reticle that always appears directly in front, which seems a bit weird if it's in 2 dimensions. But the action all seems to be on one plane.

i doubt the action is only on a 2d plain as the original wing commander (from what i remember) isn't that way.

i think what is happenning with this is that the graphics style is channeling the old games. my roommate pointed this fact out that if you look at some of the other shots (of the large capital ships) it looks very similiar to the original games.

Yeah, the original WC used some kind of pre-polygonal 3D-looking graphics. I think they used a series of larger and larger bitmaps to make it look like objects were getting closer.

I think the whole point is

I think the whole point is that this is not going to be like the previous Wing Commander games. EA's statement on the game makes it sound like they're going in a new direction rather than following the same formula. "The game introduces the classic franchise to an arcade-style experience"

The others were all in-cockpit flight games, weren't they? This one you can see the player's little ship in the middle of the screen. You can tell which one it is by looking at the radar and where the other ships are positioned.

The style, ships, and everything look like Wing Commander, as they should, but I think the gameplay will be in 2D.
