Hands-on Preview and Video with Wing Commander Arena

1up has a [url=http://www.1up.com/do/previewPage?cId=3157440]hands-on preview of Wing Commander Arena[/url], which goes somewhat in-depth into how the game will work. The preview covers the type of cameras, multiplayer game modes, ships (18 total) and the controls. As you will see from the video below, the game looks amazing. Regular commentor, McLean78, called out earlier that this game looks like it will be 2D in a 3D world, which can be clearly seen from the video.

Looks fun, but it sure doesn't look like a Wing Commander game. They should have called it something else, IMO.

I'll definitely download the demo, though.

I like the idea of XBLA

I like the idea of XBLA getting compact spin-offs of retail franchises. That's why they call it Wing Commander Arena, instead of Wing Commander, or Wing Commander XII or something.

I was a little concerned about the controls. Like maybe you'd only be able to move forward, shoot straight ahead, and turn left and right (as opposed to strafing, reverse, etc). But from the video it looks like that's probably not the case. Could be a lot of fun.

It looks like the Lego Star wars 2 flying levels, with different graphics. Could be fun.

Asteroids-ish

Okay, watching it more closely and with sound, now I think I get it. The Asteroids comment makes sense now. (http://daking240.spaces.live.com/blog/cns!4E7F2CA27C6366BE!244.entry)

The camera is locked behind the ship, but it looks to have the same rotate/thrust control scheme.
