Update: This really is coming the official press release can now be found on the Gamerscore Blog. The new press release is reflected on the full story. For screenshots of the game visit our Aegis Wing image gallery.
According to a post on Kotaku, Gamerscore Blog posted and quickly retracted information about Aegis Wing being released for free on XBLA this Wednesday. Take this with a grain of salt as the release was retracted and Soltrio Solitaire's release was posted. This may give us a reason as to why we heard about next week's release on Friday (mistake press release they had to cover up?). Either way it confirms the fact that Aegis Wing, which we found on the ESRB weeks ago, is in fact an XBLA game. The game will be released for the amazing price of free and offer four player shoot 'em up action.
Xbox LIVE Arcade Intern Project Game Aegis Wing Launches This Week as Free Gift to Gamers Xbox LIVE Arcade Intern Project Game Aegis Wing Launches This Week as Free Gift to GamersREDMOND, Wash. — May 14, 2007 — This Wednesday, team up with up to three of your friends and prepare yourselves for intense side-scrolling, sci-fi shooting action in “Aegis Wing.” Originally conceived by three Microsoft Corp. interns over the course of a summer, “Aegis Wing” will be available for free to all Xbox LIVE® Silver and Gold members in North America for a limited time. “Aegis Wing” will be available for download on Xbox LIVE Arcade for Xbox 360™ beginning Wednesday, May 16, at 2 a.m. PDT. “Aegis Wing” is a 2-D side-scrolling space shooter that combines epic space combat with fantastic visuals, and is set to a rich symphonic soundtrack. It is set in the year 2105, when humanity must flee a dying Earth for the distant world Europa. But this new home is soon threatened by a powerful alien race, the Araxia. With stolen Araxian technology, the Europa fleet develops an experimental star fighter and assigns four ace pilots to test it. The Aegis Wing is born, and it becomes your mission to wield this new technology as humanity’s last hope for survival. Up to four players can play together either locally or over Xbox LIVE to defeat waves of nefarious Araxian ships and bosses, and can even combine spacecraft in two-, three- or four-ship formations to access powerful Super Weapons. “Aegis Wing” was originally conceived by three students – Scott Brodie, Danny Dyer and Matt Monson – during a summer internship at Xbox LIVE Arcade. I guess this solves the mystery of the "ultra secret" xbla game, huh?
I doubt it's coming this Wednesday since they pulled the announcement. I hope they still plan to release it though. It sounds really cool!

Yay, I reckon this is the "Ultra Secret" title alright. Only thing is, it's only going to get North Americans really excited as it's free (Europe calling here). No matter, Sensible Soccer should be along shortly, one of my all time favourites. That and Speedball 2 has got me all excited. Now if only we could get some other Bitmap Brother titles like Xenon 2 and Gods. BTW - whatever happened to Mutant Storm Empires. Long overdue.

OH, good catch prym3! I never even noticed the date there.
Well if this does come out this week I'm going to have to download it at a friend's house to make sure I don't miss out, since my 360 is out for repair at the moment.
And I second the thought for Mutant Storm Empire (there's only one empire, btw ). MSR is possibly my favorite XBLA game, and I haven't heard a peep about the sequel since last year.

No big surprise here. It's not a shock that PR missed the memo about when to release the info. Remember when that Perfect Dark Zero email went out about the new multiplayer maps months early...oops.

Yeah, they're good at that.
Glad it turned out to be accurate, at any rate. I can't wait to play it!
Kind of sucks for those of us outside the US, though. There can't be any sort of licensing issues, Microsoft owns the IP. Maybe it's because the BBFC or the USK or whoever else needs to rate it hasn't passed it yet.
I'm a big fan of shmups, so I'm hoping my dummy US account I set up a long time back is still working - I haven't tried it since the security update.

Well, this NA-only thing is a real disappointment. If they're going to do something nice for their buyers they should do it properly and not make half of them feel like they don't matter.

I don't know.... in that case they could have just delayed the release. It just doesn't feel right to me. It feels like Microsoft is holding a party for their customers, and didn't bother to invite me.

Glad to hear it works.
It sounds like the security policies are only enforced on liscensed content where it would be illegal to sell in another country.
Aegis Wing doesn't have any liscensing issues. The only reason it's NA-only is because they didn't want to bother going through localization, certification, and rating processes for all regions for a game they were going to give away free.

What really surprised me is that the Eternal Sonata Demo seems to be smart enough to read you language settings and give you the correct one.
Almost seems like they put in the extra effort just for people who were doing this.

The ES demo *does* seem like they were prepared for us impatient folks to "steal" it off the Japanese servers. And it was very cool that it sensed the language automatically. Other than that, I really like it too...gotta download Aegis Wing tonight. Glad to know that the region restrictions are still a *little* flexible!
