Pac-Champ!: Carlos Daniel Borrego Romero

Pac-Man Championship 001

Here is the 2007 Pac-Man World Champion: Carlos Daniel Borrego Romero.

The big surprise during the tournament was that the 10 finalists would not compete against each other in classic Pac-Man. Stealing a page from The Wizard, Pac-Man Championship Edition was unveiled to the competitors the night before the final round. The question was: Who would quickly learn and excell in this new version?

The answer came in the answer of a dominating performance from Mr. Romero. Carlos crushed the others in the top four with a combined 459,330 points from two 5 minute championship mode rounds. The closest competition was the Austrian, Robert Glashuettner, with a mere 331,630. And so, the final was set between Mexico and Austria.

With Larry Hyrb (Major Nelson) and Aaron Greenberg (BIGVIP) doing commentary, the finals began. Robert came on fast in the final and got out to an early lead. Carlos seemed to struggle early but in classic commentator fashion Aaron proclaimed, "Don't worry. He finishes stong." And the tables began to turn. Robert continued to do well but Carlos simply kicked it into a higher gear and through the last minute pushed way out in front.

More coverage after the break.

For his efforts, Carlos walks away with the following:

  • A customized Pac-Man themed Xbox 360 (Makoto Iwai of NAMCO BANDAI, remarked "No e-Bay!")
  • 100,000 Microsoft Points
  • 26 years of Quiznos Subs (mmm...toasty!)
  • A plaque commemorating his Pac-Man World Championship Victory

2nd-place finisher, Robert Glashuettner, walked away with 40,000 Microsoft Points. And Dwayne Kelly Richard took home 20,000 MS Points for his 3rd-place finish.

Here is the rest of the results:

  • 4. Jason Gahler
  • 5. Timothy Balderramos
  • 6. James Rodgers
  • 7. Kitayatsu Hiroaki
  • 8. Billy Mitchell
  • 9. Reuben Anderson
  • 10. Dennis Hwang

Great job on the write ups Lunar, did you get a chance to play the game yourself?

Billy Mitchell at 8th?

He may still be fighting for the name "King of [Donkey] Kong," but he sure is no longer the Pac-Maniac he once was. Perhaps the new levels were too much.

Played it...loved it

Yes, I played it...and it shocked me that I actually really liked it. Like I said, the original Pac-Man was too hardcore for me. This way, if I finish after 5 minutes, it's because I HAD to finish (i.e. the round is over) and not just because I suck . The mode where it's dark and you can only see the walls right next to you is really fun and hard too!

As for Billy Mitchell...I image this totally new style of play probably really threw him for a loop. What's funny is that on his little bio card, his answer for "Will you win the Championship?" was "I'll probably get WHIPPED." (Yes, all caps...

p.s. Damn is Billy Mitchell tall and skinny!

Pleasantly Suprised!
Got up early to try the demo this morning, not expecting to think much of it. In reality though, even with just the 3 minutes of demo, it's a blast. Very, very nice update to Pac-Man. Sure, it's still 'just pac man' -- but the changes do a lot for the pacing making it a lot more interesting than the old style gameplay.

I like it. I'm still not sure I want to spend 10 bucks on it, but it's a mighty fine update.
I tried the demo, and was

I tried the demo, and was somewhat impressed, but it doesn't do justice to the full version.

I think they'd convert more buyers if they allowed the full five minutes... because those last two are killer.

True.

"...because those last two are killer."

True. And the last couple minutes in the 10 minute variants are the same way.

Man this is brilliant!
I found a wal*mart gift card I had forgotten about, so I converted it (via point card) into MS points so I could get the new Pac-Man guilt free.

I love it. Such a shame that most people are either going to pass on it because they've already got the other pac-man & ms pac-man. This game is brilliant. The timed modes change the game completely. The pace is so much more exciting than plain old pac-man.

The ever changing mazes and the constantly accellerating pace of movement are great as well. The ease with which you get extra lives and the fact that they're unlimited in number is just daring you to take chances.

Fantastic!
