E3 Indepth - Poker Smash Q&A

As shown in tuesdays XBLA montage, a new tile-based puzzle game will be hitting the service sometime in 2007 titled: Poker Smash. Drew Card of Void Star was kind enough to answers some questions about their upcoming title.

Click "read more" to see his answers:

What was the reasoning behind leaving Oddworld Inhabitants and starting Void Star?

Well, we didn't really leave Oddworld to start Void Star. Ryan and I both had stints at other companies in between leaving Oddworld and starting Void Star. I guess part of our motivation was to try and recapture some of the magic from Oddworld.

How has it been working with Microsoft and, more specifically, the XBLA service?

It's been a great experience working with Microsoft; in particular the Arcade crew is very helpful. Developing for the Xbox 360 is just plain awesome, because the system tools are so robust. We have a very small team (just three guys) and that is only possible because the Xbox is so easy to develop for.

How would you describe Poker Smash?

Poker Smash is a fast paced puzzle game with a poker twist. Colored cards are presented on an upward scrolling grid style game board, and the goal is to clear cards by making poker hands before the board hits the top.

How does it differ from other tile based puzzle games?

Poker Smash was developed specifically for the Xbox 360, so all the features in the game (graphics, sound, controls, community) were designed to work with this system. The result is a game that has casual appeal, but with features that hardcore 360 fans will totally appreciate.

How many tables do you expect to be in the final game? and will we be seeing more tables as DLC?

The game has 11 action mode themes. We also have a puzzle theme and a head to head theme. All together the game will showcase 13 themes each with an original three minute soundtrack written and performed by David Sease our lead sound designer. We have packed everything possible into Poker Smash, and look forward to releasing more downloadable themes at a later date.

Have you decided upon What the achievements will be and if so, could you give us some hints as to some of the more unique/challenging ones?

My favorite part of the game is making chained combos, and we've added a lot of features to make it easier to execute super long chains. So, it's safe to say there will be a lot of chain based achievements. Another interesting one is called “Self Restraint” and it is awarded for playing through the first 10 speed levels only making 3 of kind hands. It’s tougher than it sounds.

Bundling one or two gamerpics with an XBLA title initialy was far more prevailant, but has become more hit or miss recently, any chance Poker Smash will go back to this practice?

Ryan is very very excited about designing gamerpics; he already has about a dozen floating around. I'm not sure how many will be offered with the initial download, but we will certainly have a few gamerpics to choose from.

Ryan Ellis made a comment on his blog with something to the effect of online multiplayer not being very important to the XBLA customer base, is it safe to say that we won't be seeing such a mode in Poker Smash?

Absolutely not! Ryan and I are both pretty hardcore gamers, so multiplayer is really important to us. Poker Smash supports up to 5 person multiplayer tournaments, and they are pretty visceral. Multiplayer is insanely fun and usually involves much shouting.

With MS stating that all the games shown at the E3 conference were 2007 games, that gives us a very rough release window, care to narrow that down at all?

I'm sorry, but all I can say is that Poker Smash will be out later this year.

It seems that Void Star is putting more effort and care into the Audio for the game than many smaller XBLA developers do, how do you think this will effect the final product?

We are so happy with the music in our game. David has done an amazing job cranking out original songs, and he tracks all of this stuff in his house! As I said earlier Poker Smash features 13 full-length three minute songs, and I think people will find that pretty cool. It definitely adds a level of polish the final product to have totally original music.

The polish and production values shown in the trailers matches (and exceeds) many of the titles currently on the service, how have you made this possible with such a small team?

First, thanks for the kind words. The biggest factor in our polish has been the hard work Ryan and David have put into the visuals and sound. It's true we have a small team, but these guys are superstars. Another very important thing that I learned at Oddworld is to data drive everything so you can get out of the way of the artists and let them tweak parameters. My job as the programmer is to put the right knobs into the game so Ryan can work his magic and make it look great. I'm pretty pleased with the way it's turned out so far. Hopefully gamers will agree!

What pointers could you give to people starting out in game developement?

Well, I'm certainly not the guy to go to for career advice. Breaking into the game business can be tough, so I would say if you love games be persistent and try to stay as current as possible. Being passionate about games can go a long way, but at the end of the day you have to bring something to the table, so try soak up as much as you can from every work experience.

Thank you very much for taking the time to answer our questions!

I'm not gonna lie, Poker

I'm not gonna lie, Poker Smash isn't exactly topping my interest chart. I don't play Poker, so that might have something to do with it.

But I'll give it a chance once its release comes up.

You ask the devoloper and he

You ask the devoloper and he can't give a release date? You ask Microsoft and they say that only the devoloper can talk release dates?

Is one of the commandments of XBLA "Thou shalt not divulge release dates"?

It would be insane to not give a release date for a retail title, why do they jerk us around like this on XBLA? Bah.

I'm not really a poker fan,

I'm not really a poker fan, but this looks extremely fun!

Blue_Falcon, you really

Blue_Falcon, you really shouldn't think of this as a poker game but rather that the developers have used some of the mechanics within poker (namely some of the hands) to increase the challenge of a tile game.

I would imagine that something very similar could have been done using Majong (SP?) tiles.

Wow... prior to readin gthis

Wow... prior to readin gthis all I saw was the short e3 montage with this game in it. I must say I was like 'meh.

After actually finding out about the game this sounds rather cool. It seems different and fresh, which makes me want to buy it.

I'm looking forward to
I'm looking forward to learning more about this and the Word Puzzle game.

freeroll tournament

Playing freeroll tournaments is the best way to sharpen your poker skills without having to wager any money. A freeroll tournament is a poker tournament where you don't have to pay any entry fee. You just click on the tournament you wish to participate in, and then wait for it to start. Even though the tournament is free, you have the chance of winning real money. Of course the prizes aren't as high as in tournaments with actual buy-ins, but many poker rooms offer freerolls with good value and decent prizes.
On the other hand, the quality of the game is by far superior to play-money games. Players can actually win something and will therefore think twice before they make a move. In other words, play-money games are just card games while freeroll tournaments are real poker.
