Massive XBLA Achievement Update

I bring you word of a massive XBLA achievement update (the shamlessly stolen headline probably tipped you off, huh?).

Xbox360achievements.org has come through again with achievement details for Hexic 2, Marathon: Durandal, and War World. No pretty pictures to look at, but plenty of interesting things to ponder after the break.

Ironically, Hexic 2, contains the achievement Marathon Master for completing a cluster, line, or flower of black pearls. Marathon: Durandal, on the other hand, has a couple achievements with very cryptic clues such as "Vidmaster (35pts) : I give no secrets."

Also of note: War World will be launching with 15 achievements for a total of 243 points. There is something strange afoot here as that violates all the current rules. My bet would be that 12 achievements for 200 points will arrive in the "base game" and the rest will arrive under the new DLC rules. However, the achievements are broken into three sets of level-based achievements for Normal, Hard, and Extreme difficulties. Strange indeed.

I don't think there's any rule about them going over 12/200 in the initial release. Anyway, there's no reasonable way to get an even 12 for 200 with those achievements.

What's arcade mode, anyway? Does that include any of the multiplayer? It would be a shame if they made all the achievements for a game like this in single player or co-op.

Official Achievement

Official Achievement Policy:

1. All regular disc-based games MUST have 1,000 Gamerscore in the base game. This means that any consumer who buys a retail game will have the opportunity to unlock the full 1,000 Gamerscore without having to pay for any add-on content. Note that a publisher may decide to deliver a portion of this Gamerscore via add-on content, but the add-on content will always be free to the consumer.

2. Game publishers will have the option to deliver another 250 incremental Gamerscore on top of the 1,000 via add-on content from Marketplace. This add-on content could be either free or paid. So if you complete a game and earn the full 1,000 GS, you could by getting new add-on content earn up to a total of 1,250 points from a game.

3. Xbox Live Arcade games will operate in similar fashion, but given the size of these titles they will allow you to earn up to 200 Gamerscore from every game and up to another 50 points from add-on content.

So, I suppose this does not preclude them from giving 250 points in the base game, but it is implied that 12/200 is for the title and then (by supposition) 3/50 for any free OR paid add-ons.

Guess we'll just have to wait and see.

I do agree that the achievements seem really LAME though. I can imagine that they didn't want to have to built a whole layer of achievement hooks into the game though and just tacked these one with ease.
