In honor of one half of our XBLA offering this week I bring you IGN's review of Marathon: Durandal. I wouldn't typically link off to a review but this one deserves special mention. Why? Because they prominently feature the word Dramamine.
According to the review, four out of four IGN reviewers experienced motion sickness while playing Marathon. They mentioned being sick or feeling sick or something sick related in 15 sentences -- four times in the first paragraph for crying out loud. They attribute this to the blazing fast speed of the game (it runs at 60 fps) and the tight and confusing corridors.
That doesn't stop the review from being positive overall though and any game (retail or otherwise) that can give you 8-player co-op with 4 of those people playing split-screen on one box gets the nod of approval from me. That is truly sick.

I was hoping to try out the game firsthand myself to see if I would react to this (I've had two previous experiences with FPS' making me feel slightly ill; TimeSplitters: FP and Prey) but since my 360 batery is dieing, and I can't find my charger I'll be without Marathon for a little while (possibly for the better).
However, a friend of mine on another forum I frequent mentioned earlier today that he had the same sense of illness that IGN experienced. I have no idea what Freeverse has done to make this game so sickening (perhaps the bump from 30 to 60 fps has something to do with it) but I've never heard of such a widespread sense of sickness from playing a game. One can hope that they release an update to make the game...slower? (I think this could be a first time request out of a game)
Spyglass Board Games may be the only new XBLA title to check out this week (which would be slightly disappointing).

Yeah, thanks for that tip because this is crazy. Complaining about a fast framerate?!? Bizarre.
I have to test my mettle when I get home this evening.
I wonder how easy the game is when you're playing 8-player co-op? Fighting over ammo would probably be the biggest issues. LOL.

There were the same complaints at release. It was geenrally considered the combination of head bop with the unusual ability to look up and down was the cause.
If you don't get sick playing FPS in general than I really don't see how this will be any worse for you. It is IGN however so validity has to be querstioned in general. This may just be someone's idea of an inside joke.

I think the motion sickness comes from haveing a faked-3d world (it seems to be faked the same way Doom 2 was), but also having a certain degree of 3d motion (looking up and down).
Anway, can anybody tell me if they have skill-based matchmaking in this game, similar to Halo 3? I'd buy it in a second if it does, if not, back to bomberman for me.

Overated? By whom? The internetz?
For a lot of people, the game is a nolstalgia trip. To compare, after putting in so much time in Halo 2's multiplayer, Halo 1's = zero fun for me. Similarly, in 2012, if Halo 1 is released as an XBLA title for the next console, many people will consider it quite dated because Crysis's quality bar & gameplay will be seen as a low-bar.
Also note that the game is published by MGS, so ofcourse you'll get extra marketing push, expecially on the console. Now, it more than shows it's age, but saying that it doesn't compare to Doom and Duke Nukem is simply your nolstalgia talking.
As for the sickening feeling - I didn't experience it.
Side note - I love that Marathon logo - so clean & professional.
