The Warriors: Street Brawl coming next week to XBLA

It's been 30 years since the first time audiences heard the inspirational line "Can you dig it?" from the movie The Warriors, but it was only a few month’s ago, XBLArcade.com featured an exclusive news post about Paramount Digital Entertainment commemorating the 30th anniversary of release of “The Warriors” movie with a new Xbox Live Arcade title, and now we know the official launch date.

The Warriors: Street Brawl is a 3-D side-scrolling fighter reminiscent of older games, such as Final Fight, Streets of Rage and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Turtles in Time (which got an XBLA remake of its own last month), though taking advantage of the current hardware by offering sharper graphics and visual effects. This time, however, Paramount Games is wholly responsible for the arcade title instead of the Grand Theft Auto style Warriors title put out by Rockstar a few years back.

Due out next week, on September 23rd for 800 Microsoft Points (about $10), the game will offer 21 levels spread across seven missions, and it will provide four-player co-op through the Story Mode, either locally or over Xbox LIVE. The Story Mode follows the film’s story—where the Warriors have been framed for a crime and need to get safely back to their home turf—and similarly tells the tale via static images and text, though floating and moving to give it a layered 3-D look (see the video below). The game will take you through the familiar areas of the classic gang film; through the subway, down dark back alleys, and across the dangerous New York city streets on their way to Coney Island.

At the start of the game, you will be able to pick one of four Warriors (Vermin, Swan, Cochise or Rembrandt) to play. However, two others (Ajax and Mercy) are unlockable after you complete the whole game. As for adversaries, all of the movie’s gangs will be represented as well, from The Lizzies, to the Baseball Furies, to the Rogues. Staying true to the movie, The Warriors: Street Brawl will build up the tension until the epic beach showdown against Luther, the devious leader of The Rogues.

According to TeamXbox, the controls are said to be pretty straightforward: You punch with the X Button, kick with the Y Button, block with the Right Trigger and jump with the A Button. You can also grab an enemy with the B Button and do a dash with the Left Trigger. Each character has a special attack, which is unleashed by hitting the Left Bumper. Interestingly enough, this is not only helpful in doing extra damage on any enemy within range of your attack, but the fact that it causes your character to glow for the duration of the move also makes it easier to find him amid the scuffling crowd.

Paramount and developer CTXM (which previously did Puzzle Arcade on XBLA) are also trying to keep everyone firmly ensconced in the ’70s with the visuals. When you finish off certain enemies, a pick-up will appear in the form of a timely icon, such as a tape deck or jewellery. The pick-ups also help you in different ways, such as adding back your health bar a little.

Paramount says that the main “Story Mode” will offer about 4–6 hours of gameplay, but there will be other modes present in the game. For example, “Versus Mode” changes it from a co-op game to a competitive multiplayer game, so you can take each other one, while “Boss Mode” has you only competing against the game’s bosses, which should provide quite a challenge. The main menu also has a selection for “Additional Missions,” which Paramount says that they are expecting to release fresh DLC after the game comes out.

With just under a week to go, players won’t have to wait long to get their hands on the final product. XBLArcade.com will have more on the game later this week when its release date rolls around.
