XBLA Owns The Core
The Core is dead! Long live the Arcade!
According to a source at Microsoft Belgium, the Xbox 360 Core will be "completely phased out and repackaged as the Xbox Arcade: Just Play pack." According to the source, the package will include a 256MB Memory Unit, 5 arcade games (including UNO and Pac-man), a wireless controller, and even HDMI. A slide was included with the info (a section of it is shown here) detailing the new SKUs.
Considering the venom spewed ever since the introduction of the "tard pack" the rebranding is totally expected. An XBLA branded 360 gives Microsoft a great counterpoint with the masses to position themselves against the cheaper and more casual friendly Nintendo Wii. Everything makes perfect sense except the HDMI port but I assume that's just part of the hardware iteration process and nothing more.
The question is, can Microsoft get the masses to adopt the 360 to "just play" when it still requires knowing about XBLA and getting your console online?
I think they're asking for
I think they're asking for trouble if they're putting the word Arcade on it. Mainstream awareness of XBLA is as bad or worse than mainstream understanding of the differences between 360 SKUs.
This is likely to lead to misconceptions like arcade games are only playable on the Xbox 360 Arcade model, or that the 360 Arcade model can play Pac-man and Uno but not "real" games.
I hope they're using the new
I hope they're using the new version of Pac Man, not the arcade-conversion. If I bought a new console today and got "classic" Pac Man with it... well, I don't know what I'd think. I'd probably shake my head.
256mb & 5 arcade games?
Not likely to include PacMan CE - that's an obvious upsell opportunity.
As is the entirety of the package itself. that size & # of games means virtually only room for the gamer profile is left - hell, save games for each game (if any) better be really, really small.
so, it's still a "buy more upgrades" outta the box. and won't address xbox back-compat, either.
An intelligent rebranding, certainly.
To me, Core SKU is a good
To me, Core SKU is a good news.
Because I've got a 512MB memory card (or actually 470MB, when 360 software takes some of it + Geo Wars), Live Vision camera, microphone and a controller already of my own.
But I'm playing by my brother's Xbox 360 in his room.
I would sell the HDMI cable to my brother who've got a HDTV and the 256MB MU to my friend who've got a 64MB MU. Then the Xbox 360 Core SKU would cost me only around 170€ (280$ is around 240€ I guess). If they wouldn't buy them (which is pretty unlikely), I would sell the cable and MU in an auction site.
Finally Xbox 360 is in a very good price.
QUESTIONS:
When will the Core SKU be released?
Will the Core SKU be released in Europe?
Is the price decided or will it change?
What does 'SKU' mean?
Does the 5-games-package disc have a box?

The new Core SKU is set for
The new Core SKU is set for a late October release.
Yes, it should hit Europe based on the fact that the rumor of the Arcade Core originated in Europe.
The price will be the same as the current Core model (if I understand correctly) but will include an MU and the 5 games.
SKU stands for Stock Keeping Unit and refers to a specific number for each product released into the retail chain.
Will the 5 games have a box...I assume so, but I have no confirmation one way or the other.
There is a great chance that
There is a great chance that the 5 games won't have a box, because the games inside game consoles don't usually have a box. Just like Fifa 06 I got from Xbox 360. They do that to prevent resale. Also the Core SKU has a that cable, HD cable if I'm correct. But I'm not sure will the cable be in European versions.

Oh, and yes, I realize that
Oh, and yes, I realize that it looks like a bad photoshop but Gamernode has now been told to take the pic down which lends it credibility.
