Sierra Online Spoils Us With Videos

Sierra Online isn't holding back. Ross Erickson and crew aren't going to sit idly by while Mr. Erickson's former colleague Greg Canessa touts PopCap's status as the "#1 Developer on XBLA" and steals the spotlight. Oh no. The glove has come off and has been slapped across Canessa's face as Erickson "demands satisfaction".

Okay, so maybe I embellished that a bit (read: made it all up) but in a move worthy of Activision, Sierra Online has buckled up in their XBLA car and stomped on the gas. And that means videos. Videos of games we're dying to play. Games like Commanders: Attack! and Red Baron. Games that can't come soon enough. And thus, I present to you, the Sierra Gamer's Week XBLA Video Jamboree 2007! Woo!

Videos: Red Baron, Switchball, Commanders: Attack!, and Battlestar Galactica.

Commentary after the break.

Red Baron seems to be shaping up very nicely. In the video you get a look at plane on plane violence, plane on building violence, and even (gasp) plane on tank violence. There's also some really nice water reflections (2:50) and clouds (right at the start). Planes? Check. Zepplins? Check. Fluffy clouds? Check? Lots of stuff blowing up? Check. Barons? Check. What more could you ask for?

Switchball may do many of the same things that Marble Blast Ultra does, but wow it looks great doing them. And after watching this video I'm less inclined to compare the two. The cloth effect was awesome. Really looking forward to this one.

Commanders: Attack! is now nearing insta-buy status for me. The video demonstrates a core gameplay similar to Advance Wars but with its own wrinkles. And comparing favorably to AW is never a bad thing. I also appreciate the speed in which you can execute moves in the game. In turn-based strategy games like this you must avoid making the actions time consuming because the contemplation of possible moves should be what takes time. Once you've decided the best course of action, the actual execution should be swift. It appears they got it right, in Commanders.

Battlestar Galactica has stiff competition out there with Wing Commander: Arena already out. However, I do not underestimate the power of a license like Battlestar Galactica. The video is short and does not show anything to really draw me into the gameplay. The backgrounds are gorgeous but the gameplay seems a bit vanilla.

Comments

Commanders: Attack! and

Commanders: Attack! and Switchball look amazing.

Red Baron looks promising, but Battlestar Galactica is leaving much to be desired.

We are in total agreement

We are in total agreement sir.

Music...
Red Baron needs an appropriate soundtrack.
