Bigger Hard Drive Necessary: Xbox Originals For Download On Dec. 4th

Alongside all the cool freebies to celebrate Xbox Live's 5th Birthday, Microsoft has announced a new program called Xbox Originals. Simply, the new program allows you to download classic Xbox games directly to your console.

The program will begin on December 4th alongside the latest dashboard update which will also include features like the Family Timer.

The following games will be available at the launch of the service:

  • Burnout 3: Takedown
  • Crash Bandicoot: The Wrath of Cortex
  • Crimson Skies: High Road to Revenge
  • Fable
  • Fuzion Frenzy
  • Halo
  • Psychonauts

All the games will be available for 1200MSP.

Join me for a wee bit of dissection and discussion after the break.

Of course, the announcement now creates a space for retail-style downloadables without the current limitations that are placed on XBLA games. Will Xbox Originals ever include brand new titles beyond those previously found on the original black box? Might this be the way Microsoft skirts the XBLA size limitation issue in the future to attract large downloadable titles a la the Playstation Network?

In my interview with XBLA Worldwide Portfolio Manager David Edery earlier this year, he was quick to point out that larger retail-style downloads would be exceptions rather than the rule. He continued by saying, "We want XBLA to be a place where you can quickly jump in and enjoy yourself. Too many people avoid or have given up on video games because they are so complex and time consuming. XBLA is one answer to that."

As Edery indicated, making XBLA a destination for family gaming and casual gaming has been a conscious effort. So, why waste all that effort only to saturate XBLA with large, complex, hardcore-centric games like Halo and Fable? (However, everyone should play Psychonauts.) Microsoft needed a way to separate such titles from the bulk of XBLA games.

And thus, Xbox Originals is born. But only time will tell if a multi-pronged approach to downloadable games will entice (and not confuse) customers.

After all is said and done, I need a bigger hard drive.

Not really such a great deal

Not really such a great deal on the Xbox originals. In the run-up to the release of Halo 3, I bought second-hand copies of PAL Halo 1 and Halo 2 (I have them for my original Xbox, which was an NTSC unit I bought while working in the States, but they don't work with my PAL Xbox 360), and I paid only the equivalent of 1500 points for both of them, including the cost for someone to post them to South Africa from the UK. So you can find used copies of these games for much less, and they won't clog up your limited HDD space.

I agree

I agree. The only reason to buy those games would be updated titles with dashboard support and achievements. They do, however, look like simple ports using an emulator. That means no new code and absolutely no reason to buy them.

I hope they have trials,

I hope they have trials, like they do with the regular arcade games. Never played Crimson Skies for example. And I won't spend 1200points for a game I know next to nothing about. Sure, I've heard only good things about it, but that doesn't cut it.

I really wish for JSRF though, probably my favorite game on the original Xbox. And Psychonauts is awesome as well.

Do we actually know thw file

Do we actually know thw file sizes these games will require? I agree 1200 is a bit too much considering the work involved now is not any where near on a par with the amount of work that would go into a brand new XBLA game with new IP (Space Giraffe for example, or something like Pinball FX).

There are certain games I'd like to see on such a service, like some of the 2D fighters (Marvel VS Capcom, Capcom VS SNK 2, King of Fighters, etc) but I think at the moment I will get hard copies of any original games I want that will work.

Two things 1) Early reports

Two things

1) Early reports also included Indigo Prophecy but they weren't in the full press release http://www.joystiq.com/2007/11/13/fall-xbox-360-dashboard-update-revealed-download-halo-december/

2) This is the really cool thing... did anyone notice what type of title is put on their MS first person games that are still relevant with sequels (halo, fable, fuzion frenzy) and fan favorites (psychonauts). Now Crimson Skies is a fan favorite; however, with the rumors that a game is in development by the old-FASA employees dev house, I think this must mean a Crimson Skies 3 is currently in development. Why else would you promote the brand as making it a 'launch title' for hte service and not put something like Mech Assault on there.

The price is a bit high when

The price is a bit high when you consider that you can buy many of those titles at retail, both used and new, for $10-15.

It'll also be interesting to see what solution Microsoft's come up with to remedy the DRM situation for those who purchase Xbox Originals. It's got to be better than their current solutions for XBLA. If not, Microsoft had better brace itself for the inevitable class-action suits...

It's hard to price tag these

It's hard to price tag these games. On one hand it's a full-fledge game and any less in price would just not be fair to games like Shrek-A-Roll.

I mean, say Halo would cost 800points, and for that amount of money you get a full-blown gaming experience. For the same price you can get a very simple game like Screwjumper or Shrek. It's not very fair for those games, and I believe a lower price on these Xbox-originals would make the Arcade scene a bit less attractive and it would be very hard for the small developers to make a profit.

But yeah, you could probably get all of those games boxed for a cheaper price.

If this becomes successful....

If this becomes successful, support for BC will almost be completely dropped.

I never owned an Xbox, so
I never owned an Xbox, so this is nice for me. I think I may very well put down $30 for Psychonauts and Indigo Prophecy, with all the positive press I've heard of them.
I don't think BC support
I don't think BC support would be dropped as I'm guessing they are using the BC code to make these play on the 360. If anything it'll increase BC support because they'll want to make more money. Just look at what was chosen, all BC games.
What I'm saying is they wont

What I'm saying is they wont add anymore "NEW" games onto the BC list if they know they can charge you $15 to download it instead.

Also, here's Major Nelson's response to why Achievements and Online Multiplayer won't be added to games to those games.

"In order to preserve the integrity of the original gaming experience they provide, they will have the features available at the time of their initial release."

I'm sure everyone would prefer achievements and online play over the "integrity" of the original gaming experience.

Halo
I'd buy Halo if they updated it for widescreen TVs and enabled network play over XBox Live. If it's the same as the old version that you can buy for cheaper at many places already then forget it.

Wait, he doesn't mention anything about online multiplayer. Just achievements and gamer score. Online functionality should still be there, shouldn't it?

Well, Xbox Live wasn't perhaps around when the initial release of Halo launched, but the BC Halo works online, right? Then it shouldn't be a problem?

Or did I miss something?

Edit: Yeah, I'm sorry. Just did my schoolwork. I though they added online multiplayer in Halo after the launch of Xbox Live. So i withdraw the Halo segment of this comment.

I'll eventually buy

I'll eventually buy Physconauts 'cuz I heard so damn much about it that it's making me sick...

But it'll be the only one I'll ever buy if there's no Blade support or Achievements

Basically, the games will

Basically, the games will play exactly like they did on a regular xbox (and in some cases, worst).

If a game had online multiplayer, it'll still have it, but if the game didn't have it, it won't be added.

The wording of the posts
Everything I read says "ALL" these titles will be available for 1200 MS Points. They are generally very cautious about language and would typically say "all these titles are available for 1200 MS points each". Could this be a Gametap type thing where you pay 1200 MS points and can play them all? The biggest complaint is that there is varying street values to each game, who would pay $15 for a game that is less than $10? Someone who can play several games for that $15. To me, that is the only way this works successfuly.
They're still selling some
They're still selling some of these games retail for $19.99, so it won't be $15 all you can eat.

I'm not sure how they are expected to completely recode a game like Halo 1 to put Live functionality in for $15. If you're ever played it on GameTunnel you'll know that simply hijacking the LAN functionality would not be possible. It'ld require a considerable rewrite of the title.
