As a long time follower of Xbox 360 news, I have to say that this downtime actually has a LOT to do with the spring update.

There is maitnence work that takes down Live twice a year, always before the updates are released.

Why? Because they have to upgrade the servers to support the new features that will be released in the update.

So no, the dashboard update won't come out the same day, or maybe even same month as, the planned downtime, but the downtime is still all about the spring update.

yeah, we do the same thing where i work. we take it down (sort of) and put in checks to not allow normal users to see it until we turn off those checks

@Measure - yeah, you're right. The trend is always to have some minor downtime some time before the update, then the update gets rolled out a month or so later. this is a fair bit earlier than usual though...
