For The Anti-Button Masher: Band of Bugs Expansion! [Update]

For those of you not predisposed to smashing your controllers buttons with furious speed and intensity comes word that Band of Bugs will be getting its first single player expansion pack today (in fact it's out now!).

The expansion pack, titled Red Kingdom, will include ten single-player missions, two new units (a cavalry-type unit and a catapult-type unit), and also an entirely new tileset for all those map editor fanatics.

The pack comes in a 250 MSP (which in my mind is a total steal).

I remember playing much of this pack back when I visited the good folks at NinjaBee and it was loads of fun. With this expansion, the map packs (one is free), and a title update that fixed all those pesky bugs (the ones NinjaBee didn't intend) this is definitely a title worth a look if you haven't given it a shot yet.

And knowing NinjaBee, this won't be the end of their DLC plans.

[thanks to NinjaBee's Steve Taylor for the heads up!]

[Update]: Added the official press release below.

NinjaBee, a division of Wahoo Studios and a leading independent developer of Xbox LIVE Arcade titles, announced today its newest expansion pack, Red Kingdom, for its Band of Bugs title. With this new expansion pack comes more content for the level editor, leading to Ninja Bee's own "Design a Level Contest."

Red Kingdom moves the action from the Western Kingdom to the Southern Kingdom, and adds two new troop types - artillery and cavalry - and ten exciting new missions. The Southern Kingdom's arid desert comes to life with new main characters with special powers and a higher level cap. Players will be happy to see new Achievements have been added, as well as new cinematics which further the saga. The game can be enjoyed single player or co-operatively as well as in multiplayer battles.

Band of Bugs gained popularity for its level editor, which allows any user to create unique content for their friends and the community. Red Kingdom pushes the editor further by adding in desert tile sets and items such as stone huts, rock formations and more cactus types than any Bug needs. To make sure these new levels get seen, NinjaBee is hosting a contest for level editors. Once gamers have designed their entry level, they only need to post a description and screen shots to the user forums at www. NinjaBee.com. Members of the forum will vote for their favorite levels and NinjaBee staffers will take the top 3 levels with the most votes, play through them and select the number one level. Winners will get 4,000 Microsoft Points and a special edition NinjaBee tee-shirt. All levels are due by August 16, 2007. Contest rules will be posted on www.ninjabee.com.

Band of Bugs was released June, 2007. It is available on Xbox LIVE Arcade as both a free trial and as a full game for only 800 Microsoft Points. It supports 1-4 players in co-op or in multiplayer versus modes and also supports the Xbox LIVE Vision camera. One of the few turn-based tactics games available, Band of Bugs provides gameplay deep enough to be satisfying to established fans of the genre, but friendly enough to appeal to casual gamers. The game has fifty levels, and also features a level editor allowing gamers to design custom scenarios and play them solo or over Xbox LIVE with friends.

Single Player, Hell Yeah!
This is great news condering I got gold on all the single-player missions already. I was hoping that we would get some more single-player campaign eventually but I didn't think it would be this soon!

Ninja Bee is definitely setting the bar when it comes to DLC for arcade games.

Can't wait to download this after work :)
You got gold huh? Well

You got gold huh? Well what about getting all *Platinums*?!?

It's cool to see many of the ideas and lessons learned from Kaloki take shape with Band of Bugs.

Only 250? Wow. I was on
Only 250? Wow. I was on the fence (haven't gotten all platinums yet) until I read that.
Yeah, it's one of those
Yeah, it's one of those great 50% more content for 31% of the price! I actually need to get some MSP so that I can pick this up along with that Map Pack.
The total of 400 points for

The total of 400 points for the premium DLC is a nice touch too.

There have beena few DLC items for games which I am interested in but they will leave me with an odd point balance (such as with Small Arms) so I just put them on hold.

It may be silly, but if it means the difference between having the points to get an upcoming full XBLA release or DLC I generally will always got for the full game.

A little Bling
I got a few Plantinums mixed. But unless they make an all Plantinum achievement I'd need a good reason to redo the missions. ;)
Usually when DLC comes out

Usually when DLC comes out very soon after a game was released, it makes me think that content was held back so that it could be sold later to boost the effective price of a game (Mad Tracks DLC in particular made me think this).

However, this looks pretty awesome, and Band of Bugs was good value for its 800 points to begin with. I've got an odd number of points in my account after buying the Small Arms DLC (what a waste of money that was), so I'm definitely going to pick this up.

I'm all over this.

As much as I'm enjoying my vacation I'm really looking forward to everything the expansion has to offer.

Anyone else have a problem

Anyone else have a problem with the achievements for the expansion? I unlocked the two expansion achievements simultaneously today, and while the icons are both showing up on my achievements list, my Gamerscore hasn't increased at all.

My games played list still says x of 12 achievements, too, and it should be 14 achievements with the expansion. Anyone else noticed this?

Yes, there is an achievement
Yes, there is an achievement issue in the expansion. Don't know what the latest is but check the Band of Bugs section of www.ninjabee.com/forums to see what progress (if any) has been made on the issue.
