Fanboy Tears: Missing Out On Everyday Shooter

Click for EmbiggeningNormally I would shy away from talking about games on "other" console's download services (scare quotes intentional) but I cannot stay silent on this one any longer. Last week saw the release of Everyday Shooter by Queasy Games (aka Jonathan Mak) exclusively on the Playstation Network (PSN).

Now, if you look at the games that I enjoy (or those I am anxious to try) many of them involve either shooting stuff (Geometry Wars, Mutant Storm) or puzzly sonic experiences (Lumines Live, Every Extend Extra Extreme). You can imagine my intrigue (read: giddiness) when I learned about Everyday Shooter. Here's a game that combines my sonic sensibilities with my desire to blow up brightly colored shapes. Mak even admits to being obsessed with Mizuguchi's games (Lumines and E4).

And thus, filled with excitement, I began my wait to actually play the game. But I was destined to be disappointed. More tears are shed (and rage-filled blame is placed) after the break.

I had seen videos of the game being demoed and it appeared that Mak was always putting a 360 controller into people's hands. I knew it was running on the PC, but this seemed like a sign -- a divine promise of gaming joy being brought right to my doorstep through those omniscient and omnipresent tubes flowing into my console. But then, my dreams were crushed by a little announcement.

At this point I couldn't help but feel cheated. By whom, you might ask? By Microsoft. By the XBLA portfolio team. By David Edery even. Why didn't they see this diamond in the rough? It had won awards and had amazing buzz surrounding it everywhere it went. Sure XBLA has other twin-stick shooters. Sure it has other music-based games. But this game seemed to be more than the sum of its parts. It had an allure that couldn't easily be pinned down, something mysterious and mischievous.

And what's worse is that the mind behind such a game, a single man that dreamed up the entire Everyday Shooter experience by his lonesome, may soon be attached exclusively to the PSN for the near future.

So for the past week I have shed some fanboy tears at the loss of such a game. But now I simply beg Mr. Edery and team to pore over those games at IGF and GDC (next year) to make sure we don't let another gem slip through the cracks. At least we know we've already got one of them.

It pays to own all of the

It pays to own all of the next-gen consoles. Thanks to Microsoft for pissing me off enough to go out and buy a PS3 I played ES all weekend, in between rounds of painting our front porch.

Still waiting for something worthwhile to play on the Wii. Suepr Mario Galaxy, Nights & Geometry Wars are the only Wii titles I'm looking forward to at the moment.

I think this game is even
I think this game is even more interesting when some people have said it's the first PS3 exclusive that is worth a damn. And that's exactly what people said about Geometry Wars. Maybe devs have been worried way too much about all those AAA production values when all that flash isn't making a better, more enjoyable game.
While not having Everyday

While not having Everyday Shooter is a loss, I feel like we currently have, in terms of shooters, enough to fill its place.

Besides, there's probably already 3 different PC versions (like Grid Wars did for Geometry Wars) of ES available.

Well that's what was extra

Well that's what was extra frustrating. I figured that ES would be coming to the PC at least...but now there's no word on that and it's probably dead. Which sucks.

Yes, we've got our fair share of shooters but I enjoyed just looking at ES and felt like the pseudo puzzling out of each level woulda be fun (and unlike anything we already have).

But if you've got a link to a convincing PC clone, let me know. (^_^)

Since it is the first PSN

Since it is the first PSN exclusive (so far) that is really a step above Sony may have given them incentive to axe the PC version.

That isn't to say it isn't the only PSN exclusive game that interests me, but I don't need a second blu-ray player and $600 could buy a lot of MS points or a Wii and a bunch of Wii points. The mathe just doesn't work out in favor for anything on PSN. Course with the new PSP download store we may be seeing a significant number of the PS3 titles coming out on PSP soo enough...

I know...it's so much money
I know...it's so much money as an initial investment. I'd love to play ES, Super Stardust HD and Echochrome and maybe even Little Big Planet. But even if they lowered it to $400 it's still a tough sell for me. *sigh* Why can't I be rich?
Look at what they did with

Look at what they did with flOw on the PS3. In contrast to the original two creature forms you got to play as on the PC, the PS3 version has 5 or 6. Each plays quite differently from the others, and provides incentive to play all the way through. Even the credits are part of the game.

That said, I didn't particularly care for the SixAxis controls and would have preferred an option to play with one of the analog sticks.

As for ES, the sound layered on top of a decent shooter is what makes this one special.

Now I'm waiting for Echochrome. A finished version of Bubble Tanks on either service would be nice as well (the last time I played it, your tank seemed to max out with no additional challenge afterwards)

LD, I wouldn't be surprised
LD, I wouldn't be surprised to see the new $400 PS3 released in the U.S. by year's end. Someone will likely have it on sale as well; Micro Center made headlines with their $100-off Xbox 360 sale last year.
Play Garden of Colored
Play Garden of Colored Lights and squint. You may get confused and think it's Everday Shooter. (even though one is a vertical shmup)
I love squinting while

I love squinting while playing games! LOL.

Ironically, this whole post arose after I read this article. And I forgot to even include it in the post. D'oh!

This just in from Engadget

This just in from Engadget:

Ah, Target. The home of so many broken street dates. Just days after letting the Xbox 360 Arcade slip out of its doors early, the retailer is apparently proving that the 40GB PlayStation 3 is indeed coming to America -- and for $399.99, no less. Reportedly, the system is all set to "officially" be released here on October 28th, and while we've no way of confirming, we're hearing that it may be bundled with the upcoming Spider-Man 3 flick, too. Anyways, we'll let the photos take it from here -- click on through for more.

Nice find. But still too
Nice find. But still too rich for my blood. Why was I cursed with poorness? (-_-)
A less functional PS3 isn't

A less functional PS3 isn't appealing to me personally. Make it $399 with Warhawk, a bluetooth headset, 5 blu-ray discs, upcoming dualshock controller and anything else to make it fully usable with all standard games (not count the Eyetoy)...then I will be interested.

My 360 came with everything in the box to play immediately including a game and a $10 rebate on another game for $399. That was before the price drop too. I just saw a pro for under $379? (might have been $349 I forgot) which came with two games, Forza and Marvel Ultimate Alliance.

Normally Sony is on the ball but the games divisions (including SOE) have been shooting them selves in the foot every opportunity they have.

Not to mention that I'm sure

Not to mention that I'm sure the back compat is totally gimped in that version. And there are a TON of PS2 games that I missed that I'd like to play.

Then again. I hate that controller...it feel so...unnatural after using the 360 controller. Hell, even the Xbox Controller S feels bad comparitively. LOL.

The new EU 40 gigs have

The new EU 40 gigs have NO backwards compatibility at all.

Completely removed as part of Sony trying to remove the focus which is still on the PS2. The PS2 is outselling the PS3 in almost every region and they want to get devs to push their titles to the PS3 instead of the safer bet PS2.

If I buy a another Sony console this year it will most likely be a NTSC PS2 so I can catch up on a few games released in the last few years and be able to play my PS1 games again.

Yeah...if the rumored drop

Yeah...if the rumored drop of the PS2 to $99 comes true, I'd be mighty tempted. (^_^)

So...Everyday Shooter... LOL. (I love evolving and devolving conversations!)

The whole ever changing goal

The whole ever changing goal and gameplay makes Everyday Shooter sound really addictive.

Games such as Geometry Wars are addictive, but after a while it is all the same. I can see Everyday Shooter getting additional levels as part of a download and extending its life even farther. Heck, even as somethign as a remix feature to rearrange level orders would be a boon to the game. The people who are amazing at it don't get the same game every time and players who never get to the higher levels normally would get to see the different levels they would normally never play.

In many ways it is two steps ahead of everythign else inthe genre and with a few little updates and tweaks could redefine the genre for many people.

I am hoping it might find its way to the PSP. I am hearing rumblings of quite a few PSN games (though not Everyday Shooter specifically) becoming part of the download service and free PSP versions for people who own the PS3 originals. It would be a good sales driver while building in a nice user base. Push more PS3 owners to get a PSP (if PS1 games wasn't enough if you are that rich) and more PSP owners to get a PS3.

It desn.t matter whther the

It desn.t matter whther the game is promoted by PSN or X-Box or free games online,Everday shooter or such games like that, promises a lot to the gamers but unable to deliver the same ,,and at the end of the day we dont have anbody to blame for except the damm highly complicated technology.ju
